Tips for Getting Through Black Friday Shopping Without Going Nuts

October 1st, 2008

Holiday shopping on Black Friday can be agonizing , but with a few techniques you’ll breeze through it effortlessly . It may seem to some that the Holiday Season and all of the related shopping and stressful experiences are still a long way off. Well, News Flash! It really isn’t. Have you looked at your calendar recently and been left wondering what happened to the Summer ? Another couple of months down the line here and before you know it the cheerful season will be upon us.

In one respect you might be right. The needful planning of gift lists, meals to prepare and holiday cookies to consume might not be far off, but the stress can be smoother if you start coordinating now. Children change everything, including Holiday plans.

The need to contemplate early is especially real for Mom’s and Dad’s of new babies and toddlers. You have spent months speculating about trips to Santa, Christmas morning and sugarplum dreams. These first few Christmases spent with your baby and toddler are about as much fun as it gets. Don’t spoil it by letting the stress get in the way. Shopping for and sharing the holidays with a child should be a riot ! It can be!

I know from shatteringly bad experiences that lack of coordinating can spoil the season. I remember as a young mother getting geared up to get my Christmas purchasing done. I contemplated each post-Thanksgiving day sale ad methodically . Up to that time I had no newborns and felt no need to take on the crowds in the post-Thanksgiving madness .

I had yet to give in to the flashy ads promising untold savings in both dollars and time. What urged me over the top and eventually kicked off a 5 am shopping spree was the ad featuring the best pedal bike for my son. It was wonderful , and a full 25% off the sale price. This put the coveted gift in our price range. I knew he would just like it and only one thing stood in my way: the actual purchase of the gift .

With purse, cash and coupon in hand I found myself shuffling out the door at 4:30 am on Black Friday, trying not to observe the heap of thanksgiving dishes still needing my attention. Dishes could wait, today I had a goal : get one of the kids pedal cars for my three-year old. I returned home later that day with the pedal toy and a vow that I’d never, ever go farther than my living room during the day after Thanksgiving purchasingmadness.

In recent years I have reneged on my vow to never step toe out of doors during purchasing hours the weekend following Thanksgiving. Now with a bit of careful coordinating I look forward to 3 am suicide missions pursuingthe best tricycles for my twins.

I have specified a few ground rules and have a much more rigorous preparation routine than the naive buyer who once spent three hours snarling and snapping over Radio Flyer Wagons. I’ll share my secrets! I am glad to. After all I am reformed and love my yearly purchasing spree. Don’t we all want to share what we like with others? Look for articles to follow that walk you through the planning and execution of blissful Holiday shopping on Black Friday, no matter how many babies are on your list.

And if you are not wanting to go the crowd route at all, I suggest purchasing online and skipping the crowds altogether!

Breast Feeding In Public Places: Practical Mother And Child Info

October 1st, 2008

Babies that are breast fed are very portable and easy to comfort no matter where your schedule has you going. Many women however, worry about breast feeding in public. The worry of nursing in a public place is usually worse than the actual experience and often the only people who notice you feeding are the other mothers who
are doing the same thing.

Many women find ways to breast feed discreetly. You can ask your partner or even a friend to stand in front of you while you lift your shirt from the waist. When you breast feed, the baby’s body will cover most of your upper body and you can pull your shirt down to their face to cover the tops of your breast. Some mothers like to put a light blanket over their shoulders as a type of cover.

When you are visiting someone else’s home, you may feel more comfortable either leaving the room or turning away from people when you first put the baby to your breast. If you would like more privacy, breast feed in an empty room, car, or public restroom.

A lot of restrooms are becoming more child friendly and they even have a seperate area with a changing table and a chair. Several shopping malls now offer special mother’s rooms where a mom can breast feed her baby in privacy, which will help sensitive babies who are too distracted by feeding to nurse well in public. It won’t take long at all though, before your baby will learn to breast feed without any fuss at all.

An alternative way is expressing or pumping your milk at home and then offer it in a bottle while in public. Bear in mind, offering bottles with artificial nipples in the first few weeks can and probably will interfere with breast feeding.

When breast feeding in public, you should always use what works best for you. During the first few weeks, it will take some getting used to, as it will be as new for you as it is for the baby. With some time, you’ll have no problems at all.

If you don’t feel comfortable breast feeding in a certain location, then you shouldn’t. You should feel a certain level of comfort when you feed, as the baby can tell when you aren’t comfortable doing something. If you show your baby that you aren’t nervous - you and your baby will be just fine.
