Parenting Is Bittersweet - But We Do It Anyway
Child rearing is universally the most difficult position. The first day your new baby arrives is when it starts, with demands for attention that completely disregard your own basic needs for sleep and food. All other steps will encompass the twenty-something year job you have committed to. While there is not usually a tangible reward for effective parenting, the emotional satisfaction of seeing your little beings grown into well adjusted adults is phenomenal.
There are no set rules for parenting, just a lot of guidelines. What our parents did during our youth may be very different from what you want to do when raising your children. We can learn from what worked with our own parents when determining what approach to take with our children, a few tried and true techniques are listed below.
Make Learning Fun
Everyone likes to have a good laugh. You and your children will benefit from turning learning from a chore, into a great activity that will hone your child’s choice-making abilities. Try to find a humorous comic, or play charades as the first step to fun-learn, just make sure you don’t get bogged down in technicalities, using your own rules for a game makes it fun for all.
Work Smarter, Not harder
Parents need to examine different work opportunities in order to be a financially contributing member of the family. A parent has an obligation to the family to review employment options periodically to ensure they are meeting the best needs of the family. Some alternative work styles include starting your own business, working part-time, or working at home.
Individual Time
Parents need time to be alone, whether single or dual, parents need a night off now and then. Some ideas for a get-away include activities such as community groups, or romantic evenings. Spending time away from your loved ones will give you a chance to consider your family from a new viewpoint. Your family will appreciate a more refreshed you when you return.
Feel free to add in your own ideas on parenting. Having an ideal parenting strategy is great, but you want to ensure you can modify it as your family needs change. You will always be adding to your parenting strategies. If you do decide to take different approaches to parenting, we suggest writing your approaches down. The document you put together your parenting solutions could stop you from making similar errors in future.
Relax with parenting and enjoy it. Your own education can show your children the way to learn also. Your own parents got through it, and so will you!
