Newborn Diapers: The Cost

Maybe I was naive, but I thought that since you get so much more per package, that newborn diapers were more cost effective. (For those of you who haven’t had a baby, the way diaper packages work is that the larger the size of the diaper, the less you get per package, even though it’s the same price.) Of course, those savings mean nothing if you go through a lot of diapers, which is exactly what we were doing.

My little angel was was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through more diapers than I thought possible for something so small. And it wasn’t just the newborn diapers, either - the resources this child consumed was amazing. For something so small, the baby created more laundry than my wife and I combined.

Of course, I knew before we even decided to have the baby that it would be expensive. But the things I was thinking of were a little further away, like needing to get braces or going to university. I mean, just how much could this little bundle of joy cost? Way more than I thought; way, way more.

And now, I’ve become that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for anything else that might help offset these added costs of having a new baby. What happened to me? Now I get all my coupon organized and in an envelope, and go do the shopping.

And I’m also making a list before I go to the grocery store; not only that, but I’m even using the flyers to make my list. While it does save us money, the real reason I do this is not to offset the cost of buying newborn diapers. No, it’s because I’ll come home without anything if I go without a list; I’ve barely slept in three weeks and my brain isn’t functioning properly.

And what I’d probably end up with is just more newborn diapers. Package upon package of newborn diapers, because that, at least, I can remember without a list. So I make my list, and I’ve even gone so far as to actually wait for the flyers to be delivered every week. In order to make sure that I’m getting all the best deals, I go thorugh all the flyers and make a list of what I need to get from each store

Still, I’m trying to commit every last moment to memory, depsite the lack of sleep and extra strains on the pocketbook. Because I know that my beautiful baby won’t fit into those newborn diapers for long, that soon I’ll look back and wonder how she ever fit into something so small. I will hang on to each moment I have with my baby now, while my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
