Being a single parent to a pair of 7 year old twin boys isn’t close to being a stroll in a park. More so now that its little league soccer season once again. This season yours truly is to be in charge of getting the team jerseys ready.
Being one of only three men among 13 women in our team’s committee, it was quite a challenge to get the majority of the committee to agree not to change the team’s jersey color from red to a color in the pastel palette which I can’t pronounce. But try as we might, we did not manage to change the team name to The Red Warlocks from The Red Flamingos.
After searching for jerseys, and believe it or not - sponsors, it came to my attention that our kids’ soccer team did not have its own logo. I touched on this issue with the other 2 dads and we concluded that it might be a a superb idea if we had our very own soccer team emblem. So we took it upon ourselves to draw up a logo concept each and display them to the committee.
The 3 of us convened the next weekend with our designs and ended up having a laugh at ourselves, before unanimously deciding not to quite our day jobs to become designers. Apparently my Flamingo gave certain people the impression that it was a Woodpecker on questionable anabolic elements. The designs from the other two weren’t much better. One can potentially be mistaken for a piece by Picasso and the other looked like bored doodlings from a unfortunate victim of a 5 hour long company meeting. But we went along and handed the designs to the committee nonetheless.
Even though the committee collectively prohibited the three of us from designing anything for the club until such time when certain farm animals sprout wings and fly, they did come to agreement that our soccer team should indeed have its own logo. Now we are excited to say that our soccer team has its very own original logo. We had logo patches made for the jerseys and stickers made just for fun - thanks to a bit of sponsorship we got from the ice cream shop around the corner. The logo itself ended up looking extremely cool with a an unabashedly red Flamingo standing on one leg with the other leg resting on a soccer ball looking like it means business.
I heard from the little league grapevine that next year I’ll be in charge of liquid sustenance aka drinks. I’m contemplating taking it a step further and am in the process of getting the paperwork done to present to Powerade about a sponsorship contract.
